Frequently asked questions
What is the Bitcoin Directory?
A curated list of Bitcoin products that serve United States residents, organized into 20 categories from exchanges and wallets to lending, IRAs, ETFs, mining, privacy, and tax software. Each listing records custody model, Bitcoin-only or multi-asset, fees, state exclusions, and recent changes.
Are these listings sponsored or ranked?
No. Listings are neutral and unranked. BitStack does not sell placement. If affiliate relationships are added later, they will be disclosed on the listing.
How often is the directory updated?
Every category shows its last-verified date, currently September 2026. Fees, rates, and availability change constantly; treat every number as a starting point and confirm on the provider's site.
What does "custodial" versus "self-custody" mean?
Custodial means the company holds your private keys and you hold an account balance. Self-custody means you hold the keys, usually on a hardware wallet. Collaborative custody is a multisig where you hold most keys and a company holds one for recovery.
Which products work in New York?
New York requires a BitLicense or trust charter, so several products exclude it: River, Swan, and Coinbase Bitcoin-backed loans among them. Gemini, Coinbase trading, Cash App, Robinhood, and the spot Bitcoin ETFs all serve New York. Each listing notes exclusions we know about.
