Best Bitcoin Wallets: Hardware & Software (2026)
A Bitcoin wallet holds your private keys. Hardware wallets (Coldcard, Trezor, Ledger, BitBox02, Blockstream Jade, Foundation Passport, SeedSigner, Keystone) keep keys offline for long-term savings. Software wallets (Sparrow on desktop; BlueWallet, Muun, Zeus, Cake, Nunchuk, Green, Electrum on mobile or desktop) are for spending, Lightning, and coordinating hardware devices. Coldcard shipped a firmware fix in July 2026 for a seed-generation bug; Phoenix and Wallet of Satoshi do not serve US users. Last verified September 2026. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a hardware wallet?
Once your Bitcoin is worth more than you would be comfortable losing from a phone or exchange failure, yes. A hardware wallet keeps keys off internet-connected devices. For amounts under a few hundred dollars a reputable mobile wallet is fine.
Which hardware wallet is Bitcoin-only?
Coldcard, Blockstream Jade, Foundation Passport, SeedSigner, and the Bitcoin-only editions of BitBox02, Trezor, and Keystone. Bitcoin-only firmware has a smaller attack surface and no altcoin code.
What was the Coldcard seed bug?
In July 2026 Coinkite disclosed a bug in certain firmware versions affecting how new seeds were generated, and shipped a fix. If you generated a seed on affected firmware, follow the manufacturer guidance to verify or migrate your funds.
Which Lightning wallets work in the US?
Zeus, Muun, and Blockstream Green work in the US and are self-custodial. Strike and Cash App offer custodial Lightning. Phoenix left US app stores in May 2024 and Wallet of Satoshi does not serve US users.
